The Early Years with Ken, Allan and Midge
Click the Friends & Family link above to take you to Ken, Allan and Midge as well as their other friends in the Vintage line!
1959 started it all with the first Barbie Doll for sale. But she definitely needed friends in her life. Her boyfriend Ken was introduced in 1961. Ken was named after Ruth Handler's (the creator of Barbie) son Kenneth. He was available from 1961-1967 and didn't reappear until 1972. Next Barbie's best friend Midge joined the family of dolls in 1963. It seemed like everyone had a Midge doll. Maybe it was those cute freckles! Although some rare versions didn't have freckles at all, and there were some that had freckles and teeth. Barbie's best friend was on the market from 1963 to 1967, and she came in a couple other versions as well. Midge didn’t meet her boyfriend Allan until 1964. He was also Ken’s best friend. Allan only lasted from 1964 to 1965, although there were limited dolls still available in 1966. He was named after Ruth Handler's son-n-law, Allan Segal. But once her daughter Barbara and Allan divorced, we no longer saw Allan in the line! And there you have it, Ken, Allan and Midge! And for all the variations, click Family & Friends on the above link and choose your doll!
